Most people have heard of the Kentucky Derby. For 135 years this horse race for the best three year old horses is the king of the thoroughbred racing circles. But another big race, run for the same 135 years is the Kentucky Oaks, a race on the Friday before the Derby.
The Derby draws fans from all around the world including celebrities and royalty. Its all about the visitors. The Kentucky Oaks, a race for three year old fillies (thats female horses for the uninitiated) is considered the race for the locals. Drawing nearly as many spectators as the Kentucky Derby, the Kentucky Oaks has all the style and flare of Derby Day.
This year, the Kentucky Oaks has teamed up with Susan G. Koman for the Cure, the main breast cancer fundraising charity and proceeds from today’s races will go to the Race for the Cure. Churchill Downs will donate $1 per attendee up to $135,000 (for the 135th running) to breast cancer research.
To help promote this, everyone at the Oaks and around Louisville are asked to participate in a Pink Out. They want everyone to wear pink on Friday to show your support for the cause.
